Refuge Landscapes

Refuge Landscapes

13 December 2018
Crypt of the Colonia Güell
Santa Coloma de Cervelló. Barcelona

In our exhausting and accelerated world, where noise is always present and silence always absent, more and more people are seeking a landscape through which they can reconnect with themselves or simply escape the pressure of their daily lives. Some find it in the woods, in the mountains, or in hard-to-reach places, half-isolated from the world with just the sea ahead of them, places in which nature reveals its more wild state. It’s in that moment that the ideal of the primitive hut reappears, most likely - and historically- the best representation of this growing and incessant search for retreat, refuge, and silence. Then there are those, however, that manage to find these places in everyday landscapes. As such, ephemeral even sporadic spaces emerge where we can contemplate the landscape or go back to coexisting with it on a daily basis; these spaces can even be found within cities or on their outskirts. One after another, they act as refuge landscapes in demand and in defence of the values that the Landscape Observatory of Catalonia seeks to resonate through its work.
