Meet people where they are

David Maddox
Founder and Director of The Nature of Cities

At The Nature of Cities, one of our basic principles of engagement is meet people where they are. That sounds obvious, but it has consequences. Scientists, policymakers, artists, farmers, educators, and communicators all have ways of describing the world that make sense inside their own communities. The problem is when we assume everyone else should enter through our door—with our terminology, evidence, or ways of thinking.

Bagà gets to work to curb the impact of advertising hoardings

Bagà City Council was approved a by-law to restrict and regulate the installation of signs, banners and large advertising hoardings in the municipality, especially outdoors and alongside the C-16 road. The regulation, inspired by the European Landscape Convention and the Catalan Landscape Law, seeks to prevent the visual impact of certain advertising hoardings and to protect the aesthetics of the town’s urban and rural landscape. The by-law responds to situations where advertising elements were previously installed without prior authorisation.

A new alliance with fire through landscape management

Collectif Paysages de l’après-pétrole has published the document ‘Une nouvelle alliance avec le feu, penser le paysage pour composer avec le risque incendie’ (A New Alliance with Fire: Thinking About Landscape to Deal with Fire Risk), which notes how climate change has intensified fires to the point of exceeding current management capacities in landscapes that are increasingly vulnerable due to agricultural abandonment and scattered urban development. The authors call for bringing back agricultural, forestry and pastoral practices and understanding landscape as a planning tool that reduces fuel, strengthens solidarity between sectors and builds resilience. They advocate a new culture of ‘living with risk’ that integrates fire as an ecological and social agent.

A participatory photographic observatory of Parisian landscapes is created

Led by CAUE de Paris, in cooperation with Paris City Council, this project is open to everyone to observe, document and understand urban transformations through photography. Conceived as a tool for the Paris Landscape Atlas, it invites residents, photography enthusiasts and curious minds to contribute to a collective record of Parisian landscapes. Curated by the Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris (BHVP), the collection provides an ideal starting point for observing urban change over more than half a century. The first photographic campaign ends on 30 November 2026 and consists of revisiting Parisian viewpoints that had previously been identified during the launch of the Landscape Atlas project in 2022.
