- La política de paisatge a Catalunya

With the 5th anniversary of Catalan Landscape Law approval, the Government of Catalonia has published La política de paisatge a Catalunya which summarises the diverse initiatives enacted in this field. Over the last five years, the Law has been developed as foreseen, all the instruments specified in the Law have been applied and concrete actions have been taken as a result of each. Concretely in terms of territorial planning, a process has been launched to develop and apply the landscape catalogues and guidelines and the studies and reports on landscape impact and integration. As foreseen within the Law, the Landscape Observatory of Catalonia has also consolidated its role as an international reference in the landscape field and has carried out intense labour to communicate and raise awareness about this important issue. Specifically, in this last respect, the Landscape Observatory has fomented the use of landscape files and the incorporation of landscape as an additional academic subject within Catalan schools. Lastly, various annual and open calls for proposals to finance initiatives aimed at improving landscapes have been organised through the specific fund dedicated to protecting, managing and planning landscapes.

- Planning on the edge: the context for planning at the rural-urban fringe

One of the challenges faced by territorial planning efforts refers to urban fringes, that is, the areas surrounding our cities and which the authors call "the last frontier". Currently, this "frontier" represents 10% of the entire surface area in the United Kingdom. The aim of this book is to address the lack of existing research on how to manage this periphery.

This guide aims to serve as a practical reference to orientate landscape improvement projects affecting agrarian constructions. It addresses issues such as the reconciliation between functional concerns and landscape in order to achieve better cared for and more competitive rural areas. It consists of four chapters: general landscape integration issues; a diagnosis of common problems with agrarian constructions and guiding criteria; management issues; and 10 key ideas as a synthesis. Landscape impact and integration studies are instruments foreseen within Catalan landscape and planning legislation to promote the proper insertion of diverse activities within landscapes. Their application, however, is still not consolidated and requires a set of references. This is one of the motives behind the Directorate General for Architecture and the Landscape having published its Guia d'estudis d'impacte i integració paisatgística ("Guide to landscape impact and integration studies"). The goal of the latter is to provide methodological guidelines when preparing diverse studies, orientate different types of interventions, and provide a wide range of technical and informational resources to specify and implement these initiatives.

From the two fold perspective of road networks as a means for mobility and as a space from which to enjoy the landscape, the Government of Andalusia has edited this catalogue of landscape roads which it aims to prepare to convert them into a tourist attraction in their own right as well as a source of economic development, always in accordance with the European Landscape Convention.

- Landscape and Film

Despite the evident link, the connection between landscape and film has hardly ever been addressed. This volume, a collection of articles by prestigious authors, focuses on questions such as cinematographic landscape characteristics, the difference between the latter and photographic landscapes, how directors such as Greenaway or Antonioni deal with landscape, and the use of landscapes with respect to the concept of identity within the national film industry.

Paisaje e historia ("Landscape and History") is a collection of presentations given at the seminar organised in 2009 by the Centro de Arte y Naturaleza de la Fundación Beulas, d'Osca. The landscape and history concepts are closely related, and they are examined from different perspectives in these presentations to reveal the process through which a territory or country becomes a landscape.

- Intorno a noi: come capire la Convenzione europea del paesaggio

A short work, spanning little more than 60 pages to explain the European Landscape Convention to children and young adults, the aim being to educate these future adults to provide them with a critical outlook and make them aware of the value of landscapes. A volume of articles dedicated to landscapes, including pieces directly related to the Spanish Geographer Association's working group on the history of geographic thought. The group's research focuses on modern ways of evaluating and representing landscape, paying special attention to cultural and symbolic elements.
