CATALONIA

Centre de Recerca d'Història Rural
Research group at the Universitat de Girona (UdG, University of Girona) with a special focus on the history of rural landscape.
Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals (CREAF)
Centre for basic and applied research in land ecology, especially forests. Its principal aims are: to do basic and applied research on land ecosystems, develop conceptual and methodological tools to improve environmental management and transmit this knowledge through training, advice and dissemination activities.
Grup d'Ecologia del Paisatge
Research group centred on the ecology of landscape and its application to the preservation of the natural heritage. There are various areas of research, among which are changes in the landscape and modelling their impact on fauna. Apart from this group, the Centre Tecnològic Forestal de Catalunya (Catalan Technological Forest Centre) also works on various projects directly or indirectly related with the landscape (mostly forests).
Grup de Recerca de Paisatge i Reconstrucció Paleoambiental de la Muntanya Mediterrània
Working group at University of Barcelona (UB) which researches the evolution of the landscape, particularly in relation to environmental events. It also pays special attention to the influence of human impact and use of the land in ecosystems of the past. The research projects include various time scales, from the Pleistocene-Holocene and recent ages.
Grup de Recerca PLANFORBIO
Research group at the University of Lleida working in landscape planning, forest management and the preservation of biodiversity, with publications in various magazines, among them Landscape Ecology and Landscape and Urban Planning.
Laboratori d'Anàlisi i Gestió del Paisatge (LAGP)
Landscape research and teaching unit attached to the Departament de Geografia, Història i Història de l'Art (Department of Geography, History and History of Art) at the University of Girona (UdG) and linked to the Càtedra de Geografia i Pensament Territorial (Chair of Geography and Territorial Thinking) at the same university, which centres its activity on the study of landscape. It applies and develops approximations of a morphological and ecological type and on the image and perception of landscape in society. It works along four main lines: cultural landscape, coastal landscape, Mediterranean landscape and landscape ecology.
Servei de Gestió i Evolució del Paisatge
Scientific Technical unit at the University of Barcelona (UB), with more than thirty years experience in landscape themes. It is made up of a group of university professionals specialised in and dedicated to basic and applied research activities in these subjects. Their activity is fundamentally basic research into landscape (in the area of definition of the science of landscape), applied work (notably the introduction of landscape into spatial planning) and training and the transmission of knowledge on landscape through postgraduate courses, conferences and publications.

SPAIN

Departamento de Ecología de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Two of the research areas of the Department refer to landscape, one to the ecology and perception of landscape and the other to the ecology of landscape.

Grupo de Investigación Estructuras y Sistemas Territoriales (GIEST)
Research group founded in 1995 in the context of the Plan Andaluz de Investigación (Andalusia Research Plan), by a group of professors in the Physical Geography and Regional Geographical Analysis Department at the University of Seville (US). One of its research areas is landscape as an environmental and planning factor.

Research group of the Polytechnic University of Madrid which is working on three research areas: the construction of memory, the construction of external factors and the reconstruction of the landscape; with a special emphasis on cultural landscapes.

Laboratorio do Territorio
Research laboratory at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). One of its research areas is landscape planning, devoted principally to the integration of environmental factors into landscape planning through the ecology of landscape, and the inventory and design of planning methodologies of cultural areas in the rural world.
Urbanismo sostenible y paisaje
A research group at the University of Extremadura. They carry out two areas of research: the integration of rural construction in the landscape and sustainable urbanism and landscape.

Links with three landscape research groups in the Department für Raum, Landschaft und Infrastruktur (Department of Spatial, Lanscape and Infrastructure Sciences) at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (Vienna).
Kultur, Landschafts; Forscung
Austrian landscape research group. The website acts as a portal for the sharing of different projects and initiatives on landscape and works for the preservation and improvement of the Austrian landscape and awareness on the subject.

BELGIUM

Laboratorium voor Bos, Natuur en Landschap
Research group at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven Catholic University). One of its research areas is centred on the analysis of landscape, studying subjects such as landscape models and their evolution.
Landscape Multimedia Research Center
Belgian research group which promotes the use of new technologies in the field of landscape architecture.
Onderzoeksgroep Stedelijkheid en Architectuur (OSA)
Urbanism and architecture research group of the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning at the Katholieke Universiteit of Leuven.

DENMARK

Projekter om landskab (Skov & Landskab)
Research unit at the independent centre Skov & Landskab (Woods and landscape) at the Danish Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL). Carries out a large number of projects, many of which are related to landscape, with a specific focus on parks and urban landscapes.

FINLAND

School of Cultural Production and Landscape Studies
The research centre of the School of Cultural Production and Landscape Studies in Turku University. Work is done on cultural heritage and landscape.

FRANCE

Architecture, paysage, montagne
Research group at the École d'architeture de Grenoble (Grenoble School of Architecture) centred on the study of mountain landscape. They contribute to the preparation of "Landscape Plans" for Grenoble

Centre de recherche sur l'espace sonore et l'environnement urbain (CRESSON). Laboratoire de l'EAG
Research laboratory attached to the Directorate of Architecture and Heritage in the French Government, located at the Grenoble School of Architecture. Its research work concentrates on sensitive environments and on architectural and urban environments.
Centre de recherche sur l'histoire et la culture du paysage (CEPAGE)
Research centre at the École de architecture et de paysage de Bordeaux (Bordeaux School of Architecture and Landscape), specialised in methodologies of scientific research on landscape.
École nationale supérieure du paysage de Versailles
Research carried out at the Versailles Nationa Graduate School of Landscape in order to contribute to developing the practices of landscape professionals in France and Europe.
MAP-ASM
Research group working with models and simulations for architecture, urban planning and landscape. One of its research areas is "Anthropologie de l'architecture, de l'habitat et du paysage" (Anthropology of Architecture and the Rural and Urban Landscape).
Paysages Enchantier
Website created as a result of the Paysages Enchantier research program undertaken by LBA (Les Badauds Associés) in 2003. They perform different landscape related projects with the most outstanding being the Landscape Observatory of the city of Malakoff (Paris) and a series of three-dimensional landscapes which include sound.
Plateforme ''Paysage et prospective''
Platform set up by the École Nationale Supérieure du Paysage (Versailles) and HUMATECH Horizon in order to foster reflection on the need for anticipation in space management.

GERMANY

Fachabteilung Landschaftsökologie
The Centre for Agricultural Landscape and Land Use Research at the Kiel Ecology Centre, working in multidisciplinary teams with methods for the establishment of systems for developing the cultural landscape which embrace both ecological, social and and economic aspects.
Institut für Landespflege
Landscape ecology research institute at the Universität Freiburg (University of Freiburg).
Leibniz-Zentrums für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF)
Centre registered at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Association which has been working since 1992 mainly on the study and rehabilitation of the agricultural landscape of northeast Germany. On the website is a link to the programme of the European Research Network for Sustainable Development of Multifunctional Landscapes.

ITALY

Centro Internazionale di Studi sui Paesaggi Culturali
Centre attached to the Università degli Studi di Ferrara (University of Ferrara) which, since 2002, has concentrated its research and teaching activities in the field of management and promotion of cultural heritage, and the protection and evaluation of landscape according to the principles of the European Landscape Convention (2000).
GreenLab
Group researching the forest, landscape and biodiversity environment at the Università degli Studi di Bari.
Laboratorio ALAD: Architecture & Land Ambient Design
Research group in the areas of landscape architecture and territorial infrastructures, under the Dipartimento di Architettura e Pianificazione (Department of Architecture and Planning) of the Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan). The main areas of study are metropolitan and tourist areas.
Laboratorio Architettura Infrastrutture Paesaggio (AIP)
Research group in the area of landscape architecture and territorial infrastructures of the Dipartimento di Architettura e Pianificazione (Department of Architecture and Planning) of the Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan). The main area of study is public spaces in the broadest sense, including areas of mobility, connections, interchange and transit.
Laboratorio del Paesaggio
Interdepartmental research group at the Università di Pisa (University of Pisa) which centres its work on different scales of management of landscape resources, both natural and influenced by man, with the aim of improving the protection, valuing and enjoyment of landscape.

A research centre on the archaeology of landscape and tele-detection in the Department of Archaeology and History of Art at the University of Siena. The website provides access to its published articles.
PaRID
Centre of international documentation and research on landscape at the Polytechnic University of Milan, with special attention on the content and application of the European Landscape Convention and the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.

NETHERLANDS

Alterra Wageningenur
Environmental research institute which divides its studies into the sciences of earth, water and climate, geo-information and landscape ecosystems. Alterra is part of the Wageningen Universiteit en Researchcentrum (Wageningen University and Research Centre) and cooperates closely with the Departement Omgevingswetenschappen (Department of Environmental Sciences) at Wageningen University. One of its main projects is the research on a single classification system to cover all European landscapes.

PORTUGAL

Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura Paisagista
Landscape research centre at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia de Lisboa (Lisbon Graduate Institute of Agronomy). Some of the projects carried out can be consulted on the website.

SWITZERLAND

Gruppe Siedlungsgeographie und landschaftsgeschichte
Group researching the geography and history of landscapes at the Geographisches Institut at the Universität Bern (University of Bern).
Institut fédéral de recherches sur la forêt, la neige et le paysage
Federal institute for research into woods, snow and landscape. On its website are the various research projects and programmes carried out.
Landscape Research Group (LRG)
Group researching the modelling of landscape at the Institut für Raum- und Landschaftsentwicklung (Institute for Spatial and Landscape Planning), ETH of Zurich, Switzerland.
Netzwerk Stadt und Landschaft (NSL)
Network comprising of five institutes dedicated to the study of cities, landscape and the phenomena which occur in these areas. Its principal research project is Zukunft urbane Kulturlandschaften (The Future of Urbanised Landscapes).
Ö+L Büro für Ökologie und Landschaft
Planning and research institute about ecology and landscape in Zurich, Switzerland. They work on the identification, analysis and implementation of synergies between agricultural uses and landscape quality (in both biological and aesthetic aspects) in order to achieve the sustainable development of the cultural landscapes of Switzerland.

UNITED KINGDOM

CCLP (Cambridge Centre for Landscape and People)
Interdisciplinary research centre which works to integrate the cultural and spiritual values of the land and local communities in the preservation of landscape and nature, as weel as the socio-economic needs in sustainable development.
Changing Landscapes
Landscape research group at the Macaulay Institute. They analyse the different factors (from natural to financial and social) which affect the landscape.
Landscape Character Network
Platform created in 1999 by the Countryside Agency which unites diverse sectors with an interest in landscape. Publishes a quarterly newsletter. Various resources, articles and projects can be found on the website, among them: Landscape Character Assessment Guidance for England and Scotland, a guide to preparing landscape assessments.
Landscape Research Group
This is a not-for-profit organisation formed in the United Kingdom in 1967 for the purpose of fostering cooperation and interdisciplinary exchange among all interested in the landscape. Prominent among its aims are promoting education and research on landscape-related issues. The website provides access to the organisation's newsletter and to the Carfax magazine, after subscribing on-line through the website.
Landscape Research Group at the Manchester Metropolitan University
Research group at the Manchester Metropolitan University working on landscape themes. It has contributed to undertaking programmes on an international scale, for example, PARADISOS.
OPENspace research
A research centre aimed at improving the quality of life and at assuring that society's most socially disadvantaged groups and minority groups have access to green areas and outdoor environments.
Research & Consultancy Landscape Management & Garden Design
Research area at Writtle College, attached to the University of Essex, dedicated to research in the fields of landscape assesment and bioengineering, garden design and preservation and art in the landscape.
School of Environment and Development, University of Manchester
School at the University of Manchester with its own research group on themes of planning and landscape.
Unit for landscape modelling
Centre created in October 2000 and specialised in the application of GIS and teledetection techniques in the ecology of landscape. Grupo de Ecología del Paisaje y Medio Ambiente (GEPAMA)
Research group working on the ecology of landscape and environment, attached to Universidad de Buenos Aires (University of Buenos Aires), Argentina. Its members are for the most part ecologists, geographers, biologists and agricultural engineers.

CANADA

UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design
Project which centres its activity principally in the periurban landscapes of cities and metropolitan areas. Participants include the Université de Montréal (University of Montreal) and representatives of other bodies from Italy, Austria, Spain, Morocco and the Lebanon. They are in charge of the project Observatoire international des paysages périphériques: villes et métropoles (International Observatory on periurban landscapeps: towns and cities).
Landscape Ecology Lab (LE Lab)
Research group in spatial ecology and landscape in the Department of Zoology at the University of Toronto. The website offers information on its research initiatives, other research groups and various publications specialised on this theme.
UBC Landscape Ecology Lab
Research group on landscape ecology attached to the University of British Columbia.

Ecosystem and Landscape Ecology Lab
Landscape ecology laboratory in the Department of Zoology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Forest Landscape Ecology Lab
Forest Landscape Ecology Laboratory devoted to research, teaching and advice in the ambit of forest ecosystems. Its projects include simulations of changes in the use of the land and the effects of climate change, an analysis of the effect of practices in forest management and studies on the effects of historical and cultural factors on current landscape patterns.

North Central Research Station (USDA Forest Service)
Research group at the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Forest Service Agency with three principal research branches: changes in landscape, forest productivity and river landscapes.
The Center for Land Use Interpretation
A research centre founded in 1994 which analyses territorial and landscape problems in the United States and gives information on how the territory is used, transformed and perceived.

INTERNATIONAL

Landscape Education: New Oportunities for Teaching and Resarch in Europe (LE: NOTRE)
Research group financed by the European Union aimed at consolidating cooperation between universities and institutions for better teaching and research in the discipline of landscape architecture. Different working groups have been formed, including ones on the design, planning and management of landscape and cultural landscapes. They have a specific line of work concerned with urban landscapes.
Landscape Europe
Multidisciplinary network of experts and research institutes from fifteen countries, experimenting in assesment, planning and management of landscapes, with a view to the implementation of policies in education. The network is a member of PEER (Partnership for European Environmental Research). It is recognised by the Council of Europe for its role in the process of implementating the European Landscape Convention.
Landscape Tomorrow
European research network which works to identify strategies of sustainable rural development and to give support to the diversity and identity of European landscapes.
The Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape
International network of landscape researchers who centre their interest in the past, present and future of European landscapes. It organises conferences and issues publications on the rural European landscape.
Red Hipótesis de Paisaje
Natural and urban landscape research network formed by a team of young architects from Cordoba, Puebla, Salvador, Sao Paulo, Santiago de Chile, Rome, Venice, Madrid, Barcelona and Shanghai.
