But none of them own the landscape Emerson

Landscape is the ingenious instrument and the very mechanism that acts like a spring to enable us to decipher a place. It exists in that uncertain frontier where what we discover and intuit merges blurrily with what we project and imagine, in that tangle of not knowing what to do with our gaze.

The government of Navarre releases a new landscape integration guide

The integration of the landscape in the comprehensive regeneration of residential neighbourhoods is the subject of the sixth technical and educational landscape guide in a series produced by the General Directorate of Spatial Planning, under the government of Navarre’s Ministry of Territorial Cohesion. Recently, the different projects and actions to rehabilitate and regenerate residential environments have reflected an effort to improve the quality of homes, buildings and public spaces, and these must go hand in hand with an inseparable transformation of the landscape, perceived and recognised by the community. The six complete guides can be downloaded from the ministry’s landscape website.

Valencia debates the 25th anniversary of the European Landscape Convention

On October 17 and 18, the conference “25 Years of the Council of Europe Landscape Convention: Lessons and Challenges in Governance, Planning, Risk Management, and Landscape Studies” was held in Valencia. The event was organized by the Polytechnic University of Valencia with the aim of reflecting on the main achievements and challenges during the 25 years of implementation of the European Landscape Convention. The first day was structured around four areas of debate: landscape planning and its connection with other territorial, urban, and sectoral planning tools; governance as a framework for integrating social and economic demands and expectations; risk management as a response to territorial vulnerabilities; and the contents and methods for landscape studies. The director of the Landscape Observatory was invited to take part in the conference. On the second day, a field visit was made to the southern part of the Valencia Metropolitan Area to observe the effects of the October 2024 DANA and to reflect on the future of this territory.

Olive oil production landscapes: between memory and the future

Last 1 October, the second edition of the Extra Virgin Olive Oil Forum of Catalonia was held at Les Borges Blanques. This year, it aimed to delve deeper into the landscapes of olive oil production as a cultural, ecological, economic and social construction, and also as spaces of responsibility insofar as they reflect how society inhabits and transforms the land. The forum was divided into four panels that addressed these interconnected areas: Identity and Memory, to recognise the heritage and cultural value of our landscapes; Agroecosystems in Transition, to highlight the role that the olive tree can play in building more resilient landscapes; Lived Landscape, to explore the opportunities of olive oil-related tourism and transformative experiences; and Landscape Governance, to address the necessary planning and management instruments. Pere Sala i Martí, the director of the Landscape Observatory of Catalonia, participated in the Landscape Governance panel.

Priorat hosts the first Conference on Good Practices in Cultural Landscapes

On 12 December, the first Conference on Good Practices in Cultural Landscapes will be held in the Cartoixa d’Escaldei, in Priorat. The goal is to share experiences and highlight the value of landscape management practices in the Priorat region. It is highly significant that this region and its Landscape Management System have been selected as a good practice in the field of cultural landscape management. The conference will therefore be a magnificent opportunity to learn about the different initiatives for managing, improving and planning the landscape under way there, related to agricultural, tourism and energy transition policies. The conference is organised by the Spanish Ministry of Culture as part of the National Cultural Landscape Plan, in partnership with the Landscape Office of Priorat Regional Council, the Landscape Observatory and the government of Catalonia. Linked to this event, on the following day, 13 December, the Priorat region will celebrate the sixth edition of ‘Landscape Day’. The programs for the Conference and Landscape Day will be available soon.
