Participatory initiatives to promote and improve Priorat county

Scope of application:

Until recently, rural Priorat county suffered intense depopulation and impoverishment. The experience shows how the recovery of local identity and a feeling of belonging are essential to turning around the social and economic dynamics of an area. Today, Priorat county is an extremely dynamic region that has nothing to do with what it was a few decades ago. Here is a clear example of a community that has managed to reinvent itself and commit to quality for the region, expressed through a harmonious and well ordered landscape devoted to wine production. This community (local political representatives, vineyard owners, designations of origin, cultural and social organisations of all kinds, local media, experts and residents) has realised that preserving and promoting its winemaking landscape gives it a great chance to build a strategic track for the future, committed to quality and a quality of life with high added value. This was accomplished through many initiatives linked to the landscape, such as the landscape charter of Priorat and Priorat's candidacy as a UNESCO world heritage cultural landscape, to name only two.
